In order to complete the written and practical exams for the IFREMT, you first must complete the designated program. (Program previously DaRcy Lane's Equine Massage, and currently Mitchell's School of Equine Massage Therapy program.)

I attended tRios College in London, Ontario, for the intensive 2 year 2200 hour hands on Equine Massage Therapy program. Being the equine version of a human registered massage therapy program it included in depth knowledge on the equine athlete from anatomy/physiology and nutrition to massage theory/techniques and remedial exercises. After graduating with honours in 2023 and successfully passing the Registration exams I returned to the Ottawa area to start Elevate Equine Massage, but am always continuing to learn, stay tuned for new courses!

IFREMT

Established in 1996, it is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and ensuring the highest standard of equine massage therapy.

The IFREMT sets the standards of qualifications needed to become a Registered Equine Massage Therapist, holding accreditation exams once per year. REMT is a legally protected title held by the IFREMT and may only be used by those that have met and passed their qualifications. Though equine massage is not a regulated profession, the IFREMT hold its members to the same standard as the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) the human RMT governing body!

Check out their website for more information on schooling, testing, and where to find an REMT in your area!
